The Bungalow Pit

Tales of a 1913 California Bungalow restoration.

The Chimneys

The good news: we found out the person who built our house built many of the houses in the area, but built this one for himself—so he added some extras to this one, such as two fireplaces. There is one in the den on the South side of the house and one in the living room on the North side.

The bad news: they both had to be torn down and replaced. The bricks were in such bad shape you could remove them by hand outside, sunlight was visible through them on the inside, there was no cap on them so anything (and everything) went down them, and the previous owner let bougainvillea and vines grow up them (and in them!) for years.

We had to decide, tackle this one at a later date, or deal with them now? We figured if we put it off we’d never get to it so better to deal with it now. Let the demolition begin.
